Pharmaceutical Research and Development

People live much longer than a century ago. Experts estimate that half of that gain (10 to 20 years) is attributable to medicines.

In this section Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development (PRD), the worldwide research organisation of Johnson & Johnson that contributed significantly to this progress, is explained.

Innovative science is the basis of innovative products. We focus resources on research programmes that show both real scientific merit and a potential contribution to treating inadequately treated diseases. Publication and professional recognition are major measures of significant scientific findings. Our scientists have been recognised for a wide variety of achievements, among them:

PRD researchers and their external collaborators were recognised with two cover stories in Science, the prestigious journal of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science. One describes the discovery of a peptide that mimics a much larger protein, creating the potential for a new technology platform; the other details a major finding about T cell receptors.

The World Health Organisation selected about 200 drugs which are essential to the health of very large numbers of people and ensures that they are internationally available at a reasonable price. Five Janssen products have been selected for the WHO List of Essential Drugs, more than any other company.

What makes us so successful in today's competitive environment, is our unique organisational structure, exceptional people, and cutting-edge technologies
