Beerse, October 17, 2005 – In conjunction with the annual worldwide Energy Week at the parent company, Johnson & Johnson, Janssen Pharmaceutica announced that it is switching over to green energy for all its affiliates in Belgium.
In the past recent years, Janssen Pharmaceutica has initiated various projects which have led to a significant reduction of the energy consumption and CO 2 emissions. These have resulted in major savings. The company has decided to use part of the savings to purchase green electricity for Janssen Pharmaceutica's four establishments in Belgium, namely: Beerse I and II, Geel and Olen. This means that these sites will use this renewable energy resource to the exclusion of all other electricity sources .
The company undertakes to continue to develop and initiate energy-saving initiatives. For this purpose Janssen Pharmaceutica has signed the Flemish Energy Covenant. An audit conducted in 2003 showed that the installations ranked among the world's best in terms of energy. The company is committed to expending every effort to maintain the installations at that level in the future.
In sum, this represents a decrease of 4.5% in CO 2 emissions for Johnson & Johnson worldwide.
‘In this way we meet our legal obligations, achieve the internal business objectives as regards energy and CO 2 and also reach the Kyoto protocol target f or 2005', explains Pieter Breugelmans, Head of the Energy and Utilities Department . ‘Our manner of working shows that i t is perfectly possible to achieve a net cost reduction and our goal for CO 2 reduction, and achieve them simultaneously. The department not only runs the energy systems, we also maintain them, do our own process optimization and plan additional expansions. So this achievement was accomplished by the operators, technicians, engineers and others who, day in, day out, run and maintain and try to improve our processes and systems, all with the same focus on energy.'
These cost reductions and the introduction of new energy technologies are not only an added value for Johnson & Johnson. They are also fully consistent with the principles of Johnson & Johnson's Credo, which embodies the company's social responsibility. By purchasing green energy and thus stimulating the ongoing development of renewable energy sources, the company is protecting both the environment and some of the world's natural resources.
Janssen Pharmaceutica is the largest private consumer of green – renewable – energy in Belgium.
The annual Energy Week is currently taking place worldwide in the Johnson & Johnson organization. In this period extra attention is given to the rational use of energy and the results that have been achieved. Co-workers are given energy-saving tips, both for the home and the workplace. |
